John 8:37-41

I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
“Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. You are doing the works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

At the heart of this continuing exchange between Jesus and the Jews is a challenge to their understanding of their identity. The Jews prided themselves on their lineage to Abraham, believing this bloodline granted them a special status before God. But Jesus tries to get them to see beyond ancestry. He says true kinship with Abraham is not just about blood but about embodying the faith and righteousness that Abraham exemplified.

Their desire to harm Jesus, despite him speaking the truth, was opposed to Abraham's faithfulness. Abraham, known as the father of faith, was willing to obey God even to the point of sacrificing his son Isaac. He listened to God's word and acted on it. The Jews, on the other hand, were rejecting the very Word of God standing before them.

Jesus' words are a powerful reminder that spiritual lineage is not just about heritage or tradition. It's about living out the faith we profess. Being descendants of Abraham (or any other spiritual figure) means little if one's actions don't reflect the faith and righteousness of their forebears.

This passage challenges us today just as it challenged the Jews then. It prompts us to introspect: Are we living out the faith we profess? Or are we resting on the laurels of our spiritual ancestors, traditions, or denominations? True spiritual lineage is marked by a life that resonates with the teachings and spirit of those who have gone before us in faith.

God bless you.
