John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

These profound opening verses of the Gospel of John echo the opening words of the book of Genesis. Just as Genesis 1:1 declares, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth," John 1:1 takes us back to that extraordinary moment but goes even further, unveiling the eternal nature of the Word, who was both with God and was God himself.

Here, the "Word" refers to none other than Jesus Christ, who existed before time began, in perfect union with the Father. In this way, John establishes the divinity of Jesus right from the start, declaring him as the pre-existent Word who was instrumental in the creation of all things.

As we draw parallels with Genesis 1:1, we see a profound connection between the act of creation in both passages. In Genesis, God spoke the world into existence, saying, "Let there be light," and there was light. In John, we learn that the Word, Jesus Christ, was life, and this life became light — the light of humanity. In a world enveloped in darkness, literally and metaphorically, the light of Christ shines forth, offering illumination, understanding, and hope. It is a light that pierces through the deepest darkness, for it is a light that originates from God himself.

As we reflect on these verses, let us marvel at the splendor of God's plan of redemption. The same Word that spoke creation into existence is the Word that has entered our world as Jesus Christ, bringing life and light to a fallen humanity. Jesus reveals the fullness of God's creative power and love.

And let us remember that, just as the darkness did not comprehend the light when Jesus entered the world, there may be forces that resist the light of Christ in the world today. Yet, the power of his light remains steadfast and unconquerable. In a world longing for meaning, purpose, and truth, may we embrace the eternal Word, Jesus Christ, as the source of life and light that guides our path.

God bless you.
